Bulls looked to the future - Pine Pienaar
The Blue Bulls have put the disappointment of missing out on the
Currie Cup playoffs behind them and have found delight in the young
talent they have developed during this year’s competition.
In his first year in charge of the Blue Bulls, coach Pine Pienaar had a
tough task of blooding new players and keeping the team competitive.
The side had a final stab at qualifying for the playoffs on Friday when
the Bulls comprehensively beat the Leopards 92-21 in Pretoria.
Western Province, however, poured cold water on their ambitions as
they beat the Pumas in Cape Town to secure the fourth-place with one
log-point separating them from the Bulls.
"I think all the players put their hands up tonight [Friday] but there were
a number of young players who got an opportunity to play Currie Cup
and did well," said Pienaar.
"Especially players like Arno [Botha] and CJ [Stander] played really
good rugby and I think that really excites us about the future.
"It is always great to see those kind of players in the Currie Cup and
know it will give you depth for the Super15."
Pine Pienaar
The Blue Bulls gave themselves the best
possible chance of qualifying for the Currie
Cup semifinals as they ran riot at Loftus
Versfeld, scoring 14 tries against the
Leopards on their way to a resounding
92-21 victory.
The Men from Pretoria knew that they
needed to take a healthy points difference
advantage from this clash with the log
bottom dwellers and their intent was
obvious from the outset as they threw the
ball around, going hell for leather from the
first whistle.
The hosts wasted no time in racking up
the points and were going at a
point-a-minute in the first half. Tries from
Akona Ndungane, CJ Stander, Jano
Vermaak, Francois Venter and Juandre
Kruger in the opening half-hour of the
Jacques Potgieter - a future star?
Retired Springbok lock Victor Matfield
said he would take a months break
before deciding on his future, but
added that he has many options to
consider.
These include being a rugby pundit
for pay channel SuperSport or
possibly becoming involved in
coaching in the near future.
"It looks like I will go to SuperSport
next year but I would like to be
involved with rugby, so I will see what
options open up for me in future," he
said.
The intellectual property that Matfield
has should certainly not be wasted
and the new Springbok coach would
do well to include him in the set-up in
a role similar to the ones that former
players such as Os du Randt and
Percy Montgomery have filled in
recent years.
Matfield, who was considered the best line-out practitioner in world rugby, is also a
shareholder of the Boland Kavaliers and did not rule out the possibility of becoming more
involved with that team as a starting point.
"I've always been involved with Boland where I have shares and maybe one day if the time
is right, I will go there," Matfield said.
For the Blue Bulls:
Tries: Ndungane, Stander 2, Vermaak, Venter, Kruger 2, Basson 3, Penalty try, A Botha, G Botha, Brummer
Cons: Fouche 11
For the Leopards:
Tries: Dunlop, Engelbrecht, Maritz
Cons: Dunlop 3
Pienaar said the new-found talent will keep players who are regulars in certain positions on their toes and add pressure for them to
perform.
He, however, said advancing to the playoffs would have been the first prize and they gave themselves some hope with Friday’s
performance.
"One thing that I can say is that at one stage we were bottom of the log and the guys stuck together and showed a lot of commitment.
"We fought our way out of that hole and gave ourselves an opportunity. Unfortunately, last weekend we did not play that well and
Griquas punished us for that," said Pienaar.
The Pumas prop Dawie Steyn has signed a two-year contract with the Blue Bulls.
The 27-year-old would play for the Pretoria side in 2012 and 2013, the Bulls said in a statement on
Friday.
Steyn was born in Pretoria, schooled there and attended the University of Pretoria, where he played
Super Bowl rugby. He represented the Blue Bulls amateur side before embarking on a professional
rugby career at the Pumas in 2008.
"It has been a dream of mine all my life [to sign with the Bulls]," Steyn said.
Frans Ludeke, the Bulls' Super Rugby coach, said he was impressed by Steyn's performances in
recent seasons.
"Dawie will add depth to our front row and we have all seen the importance of having that," Ludeke
said.

Jan Oberholzer
ex Blue Bulls captain
Die rugbyjaar  "2011"
2011 was 'n rugbyjaar wat enige mens wat blou bloed in sy are het so gou as moontlik sal wil vergeet. In
Bul ondersteuner is 'n trotse spesie.
From ou BULLSClub members / Van ons BULLSClub lede

so verbind is as baldraer optree nie.
