With both sides taking the ball wide from the outset,
the Bulls team – in effect their A-side – beat a plucky
Lions Red team 42-12 on Saturday, scoring five tries
to two in a warm-up match ahead of the Super 14
competition.
The Lions were not totally outplayed, despite the
scoreline, and the Bulls were undoubtedly good
value for their win. The Lions made a real match of it
despite never leading – and more importantly, there
was plenty for their director of coaching, Dick Muir,
and his assistants to work from as a base for this
season.
Two of the Bulls’ five tries came in the dying minutes
and the Lions were denied on three occasions when
they squandered tries through poor handling.
It must also be remembered that this was not the
Lions’ best team, and despite their 25-3 defeat in the
early match, there were enough individual
performances to show that they can further
strengthen their best XV.
They scrummed well, were competitive at the
breakdown and the backs displayed some good
skills, with Emerging Springbok Deon van Rensburg’
s pass to set Wandile Mjekevu free for his try
probably the individual highlight of the game – and
that’s taking into account the cross kick by the Bulls’
Morne Steyn after a quickly taken penalty that ended
with John Mametsa scoring.
Scorers:
Bulls: Try: Gerhard van den Heever (2), Werner
Kruger, John Mametsa, Dries van Schalkwyk.
Conversions: Morne Steyn (4). Penalties: Steyn (3)
Lions Red:
Tries: Wandile Mjekevu, Pieter Engelbrecht.

Blue Bulls lost one of its sons
On Wednesday the Blue Bulls community lost one of its favored
sons, Ruben Kruger. Ruben Kruger has had a battle with cancer
during the last years of his life and the Blue Bulls supporters and we
at the BULLSClub would like to express condolences and sympathy
with Ruben’s family and friends.
Ruben, who was effectively known as the “Silent
assassin”, was one of the Blue Bulls’ all time greats
and this tough as nails flanker, also a Springbok and
1995 Rugby World Cup winner, played his provincial rugby for the
Free State and the Blue Bulls.

Ruben Kruger, former
Springbok flank and 1995
Rugby World Cup
winner, has died in Pretoria
on Wednesday night after a
protracted battle with brain
cancer.
Kruger, who would have
turned 40 on March 30, was
diagnosed
with a brain tumour soon after his playing career
ended in 1999.
Kruger made his Test debut on November 6, 1993
against Argentina in Buenos Aires aged 23. He
played his last Test on November 4, 1999 against
New Zealand in Cardiff aged 29. He played 36
Tests in total, scoring seven tries. He also played
in 20 tour matches.
Kruger had fought back from a broken leg suffered
in a Tri-Nations match in 1996 to earn selection to
the 1999 World Cup squad and fought his
recurring illness with typical bravery and stoicism.
Nicknamed the “Silent Assassin” by coach Kitch
Christie during the 1995 Rugby World Cup he
scored a controversial try in the semi-final played
in a deluge against France in Durban but was
denied what appeared to be a certain try by referee
Ed Morrison in the Ellis Park final.
Considered the kingpin of the side he was named
SA Rugby Player of the Year for 1995.
Kruger, who hailed from Vrede in the Free State
and went to Grey College, is survived by his wife
Lize and two daughters Zoe and Isabella.
At provincial level he was a stalwart of both Free
State and the Blue Bulls.
Kruger had battled the brain tumour since 2000,
where it was diagnosed after he blacked out
during a game.
